Kildee Out, Kooiman Out

Races are getting more and more clear as we enter March.

On the Democratic side for Governor, Dan Kildee has decided not to run asserting that it would cause a split in in both labor and progressive organizations between himself and Virg Bernero.  Not wanting to see that, Kildee has stepped aside.  All due respect to Alma Wheeler Smith, I don't expect this field to change, we now have a Bernero v Dillon primary.

Former State Representative Jerry Kooiman also bowed out of a race for Congress in the 3rd district and endorsed Steve Heacock.  Clearly, Kooiman didn't want to leave his high-paying and probably very fulfilling job with the new MSU medical school. And, the East/Business Establishment (minus the DeVos clan) are trying to rally around Heacock to prevent the Amash Catastrophe.  So, I think we've got our field in the 3rd: Justin Amash, Bill Hardiman and Steve Heacock. The only other person who could still get in is Terri Lynn Land, who I think will eventually get in near the deadline after a Bouchard drop-out.

Statement from Dan Kildee
Withdrawal From Democratic Gubernatorial Primary Election

From the day I began exploring a possible run for Governor I believed it was critically important for Democrats to rally behind a consensus candidate who reflects the best of our party's values.

All along I have said this election is not about me, but about the future of the state.

It is now clear that the effort to unite progressive organizations and organized labor around a single candidate will not occur. With me in this race, that support will be splintered.

Unlike other candidates, I cannot simply "roll the dice" and still live up to the commitments I have made to the funders, board, staff, and communities that rely on me to lead the Center for Community Progress, my new national land-use think-tank.

I certainly had hoped to be the candidate to unite the diverse interests that comprise the core of Democratic Party. I am convinced, however, that with three mainstream Democrats in the primary race-Mayor Bernero, Rep. Smith and myself-the will of the majority of Democratic primary voters would likely give way to the plurality of a minority of voters and our party's nominee will go down to defeat in November. This is unacceptable to me.

I have decided, therefore, not to continue my campaign for the Democratic nomination for Governor. This is not an easy decision. I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support from Democrats, Republicans and independents from across Michigan who want change in Lansing and believe in me. I want to thank all of them and encourage them to join me in staying involved and making sure we elect a great governor in November for the Great Lakes State.

I especially want to thank my friends and family - and the new friends I have met - who were so willing to give of their time and resources to advance a campaign. Your offer of help is something I will never forget.

I realized that when I was reading the GVSU magazine.  Jerry is pursuing his M.P.A. in health care management.  Nope, not the move of someone who still longs for the bright lights of Washington.  (Slaps forehead).  It was there in front of us all along.
