Hoekstra Retiring from Congress to Run for Governor?

by: philgoblue

Tue Dec 02, 2008 at 19:07:46 PM EST

Yesterday, MIRS reported that US Representative Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland; 2nd District) will soon announce that "he will not run for his congressional seat in two years."  Hoekstra will then announce the creation of an exploratory committee to be followed by formal announcement that he is indeed running for governor of Michigan (the flied already includes Attorney General Mike Cox).

With Hoekstra leaving Congress, thoughts turn to who might run in a Republican primary to replace him.  Possible names include State Senator Wayne Kuipers from Holland, State Representative Bill Huizenga, and maybe Secretary  of State Terri Lynn Land (if she moved a few miles west into the district).  Any others you can think of?

With an open seat, will Fred Johnson run again?

Oy... (4.00 / 2)
Barb VanderVeen gives me nightmares. Then again so do Huizenga and Kuipers. Gerald Van Woerkom is term-limited out, so he may run (and I have a bit of a vendetta against him, so if he runs he becomes my #1 target in 2010). Holly Hughes might try for the big prize, too.

Then again, I'm trying to come up with Democratic names and I'm coming up empty. As for Fred Johnson...mmm...no comment.

Word was (4.00 / 1)
Fred was one and out. That may change. Who knows. What I do know is that the 2nd CD is pretty much blank for candidates right now. Even with an empty seat we won't win this until redistricting. Even then it's a pretty big uphill climb.

As someone with something approaching inside knowledge... (4.00 / 2)
Fred learned a lot from his run this time.

He's not made any decisions about 2010 (and I wouldn't expect him to for a while) but he knows there's a few things he needs to be doing to keep his hat in the ring, so to speak, and to build a foundation for a successful run in 2010.

His plans right now are to do those things over the next year, to keep his options open.

Hopeful (4.00 / 1)
I would hope that Fred runs again. He got his name out there and was somewhat competitive. Especially in Muskegon. If a repub from either of the two southernmost counties runs its over. They are too strong to fight throughout the rest of the district. Hoekstra needs to be defeated now before he can run for governor I am wiling to do everything in my power to ensure that he is not our governor.

Agreed. (4.00 / 1)
Fred Johnson seems at this point to be the only viable Dem for the seat.  Here's hoping Obama swings enough undecideds and moderate Repubs our way in the next couple of years so the Dems have a shot at CD-02.

As for Repubs, seems likely enough that Holly Hughes would be groomed for this jump.  But others mentioned above have lots more visibilty district-wide.

Should be interesting.  Verrrrry interrrresting!

Hoekstra (0.00 / 0)
He would be the worst possible governor that we could have. Can we convince him that Ottowa county is in a minority and the rest of the State does not support him.
