Eight years is enough

by: johncherry

Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 13:00:38 PM EDT

(Welcome LTG! - promoted by philgoblue)

I hope you read my blog post today at mi.barackobama.com. With only four days left until the most important election of the last eighty years, I'm doing everything I can do to help create the change we need by electing Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Please join me in working hard these last four days to elect Barack Obama president, and read my blog post to learn about all the reasons why Senator Obama will be a partner for Michigan in the White House. Eight years of Bush policies are enough!

Restoring and preserving our Great Lakes

by: johncherry

Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 15:54:34 PM EDT

(Thanks for letting us know Lt. Governor Cherry.  There's your invite folks, head over to Great Lakes Town Hall for the conversation. - promoted by philgoblue)

On Thursday, the reauthorization of the Great Lakes Legacy Act was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This Act has been the cornerstone of our work to preserve and protect the Great Lakes and it has already proven effective in those efforts. I applaud the U.S. House of Representatives and their commitment to expand and continue this vital program. Now we have to keep pushing to make sure the United States Senate passes the legislation as well.

During the next month I will be participating in public meetings conducted by the Office of the Great Lakes. We are seeking your input on the draft framework that will serve as Michigan's action agenda for Great Lakes restoration.

Also, the Great Lakes Town Hall has asked me to be a guest blogger this week. Starting today, I'll be writing about the upcoming hearings and the Commission's work thus far. Later in the week, I'll explore the main issue areas covered in the Commission Draft Action Plan, and the need for continued collaboration at the local, regional, and national levels.

I hope you will all join the conversation at the Great Lakes Town Hall!

My day in Berrien County

by: johncherry

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 09:55:44 AM EDT

(Welcome Lt. Governor Cherry!  A stirring report. I especially like the historical references, which I appreciate for obvious reasons. - promoted by philgoblue)

Speaking at the Berrien County Democratic Party

Yesterday's activities began in Michigan's Twin City Region-St. Joseph/Benton Harbor.  Historically, these two communities were sited at the confluence of two major Indian transportation routes.  The Sauk Trail was the major land route across Michigan's Lower Peninsula, and connected to the major water route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.  The Miami and Potawatomi established camps in the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area.

St. Joseph is also the home of one of my duck hunting companions-Judge Charlie LaSata.

The purpose of our stop here was to celebrate the work that The Conservation Fund, in conjunction with the Berrien County Drain Office and Health Department, has done to reduce the sediment load that the Galien River dumps into Lake Michigan.  Non-point source pollution is a major pathway for the deposition of toxics and other contaminants into the Great Lakes.  Through a local, state, and federal partnership, a watershed management plan was developed and is in the process of implementation.  A number of conservation easements have been purchased.  This year's $300,000 grant will be used to tackle E. Coli contamination by identifying failing septic systems and protecting wetland areas.  Additionally, local residents are organizing two river cleanups this year.
